Voice transcription and search recognition software have been around for many years from a variety of companies. For us, thankfully, it can remain a black box. And yet we do not have to invest the time to deal with all of the deep fundamental theories and techniques that underlie these system. Today's technologies are already becoming available in consumer-level products and development systems, allowing us to begin to experience the future of speech input/search systems. Add to this the algorithms and sophisticated programming needed to process all of this information and the computer processing power and storage needed to just store this data - and it is easy to see the complexity of the task. Amazingly, the announced development timeframe isn't years away but is anticipated in 18-24 months.Įven the very terminology of speech recognition, command, and search systems is complex: speech recognition, speech understanding, statistical modeling, spectral analysis, acoustic and language modeling, automatic transcription, keyword spotting, dialog systems, neural networks, pattern recognition, ubiquitous computing, auditory interfaces, automatic speech recognition, voice recognition, natural language interfaces, continuous speech recognition. The day after Watson's amazing appearances on JEOPARDY!, IBM and Nuance Communications announced plans to develop advanced medical analytics systems that "will combine IBM's Deep Question Answering (QA), Natural Language Processing, and Machine Learning capabilities with Nuance's speech recognition and Clinical Language Understanding (CLU) solutions for the diagnosis and treatment of patients that provide hospitals, physicians and payers access to critical and timely information".
This, coupled with high-speed computer processing, is turning sophisticated speech recognition, voice commands, intelligent transcription, and computer- assisted decisionmaking into a reality. IBM's Watson shows that speech recognition today is light-years beyond the days of Edison. The ship's computer in Star Trek not only understood and responded correctly to human voice commands but could identify the speaker as well. Star Wars' R2D2 (who could understand but not communicate in spoken words) used his sidekick C3PO as his translator.
Remember HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey"? Recognizing speech was the least of the problems with HAL. Until IBM's Watson appeared on the scene, the most successful speech recognition system appeared in the movies or science fiction. Just as these discoveries - and so many others - resulted in unforeseen product developments, we are now witnessing the merger of the advantages of cloud computing with state-of-the-art mobile computing technologies that promise to change 21st-century definitions of communication, just as the work of Edison and others helped define 20th-century communication and entertainment.
